Dead Reckoning
Having fixed a starting position, you can opt to turn on dead reckoning. Input your estimated boat speed, leeway and tide and PassagePlus will compute and display your estimated track (shown in red here). You can change any of the variables (speed, leeway, etc) at any time. Remember the track shown is an estimate! You should re-fix your position periodically and restart dead reckoning from the new fix.
Those with GPS will of course be able to get a far more accurate track, but manual fixes and dead reckoning are useful for those with no GPS or a non-functioning one.
In this example, the 'Project' option is selected and the boat's projected position in 5 minutes' time is shown. The number of minutes can be changed in Preferences. back
